Formal educational programme
The main activity in the formal educational programme is to train students as per the scheme and syllabus prescribed for the various Bachelor’s, Post-Graduate and Research courses:
Non-formal educational programme
SJCE organised several continuing education programmes every year, catering to a large group of users including working professionals:

| Summer / Winter Schools | Update programmes for teachers from engineering institutions, sponsored by UGC, ISTE, the Department of Electronics (Government of India) and others, to impart state-of-the-art knowledge in particular fields. |
| Induction training for industries | Job-profile training for freshly selected candidates of premier organisations such as Hindustan Computers Limited and Bharat Earth Movers. |
| Training for working professionals | With SJCE-STEP: Maintenance Management, Quality Management, Press Working, Construction Management and more. |
| Training under MEGSAT | Through STEP and the Community Polytechnic, programmes for the common man — e.g. maintenance and repair of hand pumps in rural areas and ASTRA chulas — under the Mass Employment Generation Scheme. |
Research and development cell
The management created a separate cell in 1988 to promote research and development. The R&D cell, coordinated by a nominated coordinator, provided financial assistance as a means of staff development:
- Initial funding for preparation of research proposals
- Travel support for those presenting research papers at national and international conferences
- Support for preparing research papers for publication in journals or seminars
The cell also shared information on thrust areas of research, project proposal forms and circulars from funding agencies.
